You’re gonna’ flip when ol’ St. Nick plays a lick on a peppermint stick.

By the time December rolls in, our holiday records have been spinnin’ for a few weeks. Our go-tos are upbeat, jazzy tunes, and I’ve picked a fav to inspire Day 7’s tag: Cool Yule! (If this one isn’t already on your holiday playlist, you can give it a listen below.)

As you might guess from a song originally introduced by Louis Armstrong, it features a big, swingin’ trumpet. I included a nod to that on my tag by using music-playin’ animals from a non-Christmas Lawn Fawn set, and brought the festive with holiday bits and bobs from another. I finished the tag by setting a cool, frosty scene of layered landscape dies, all cut from white.

My favorite part of the tag is the peppermint-stick-colored flute, inspired by a line in the song. It was a “monkey-clap” moment when the simple Copic coloring – with a gel pen stripe – worked. Gotta’ relish the small successes! *wink*

TIP: Use vellum over “snow” dies to create a soft, dreamy effect.

If you’ve been cool, Santa won’t do ya’ wrong.

Sometimes you have time to build a scene with loads of layers and sometimes ya’ need something faster; the Essentials by Ellen Letterboard Die Set works great for speedy, stylish tags, and it’s easy peasy to adapt the frame and the “board” to smaller sizes. I made a few of these to add on to packages alongside the main tag.

TIP: You can simply punch a hole in any shape to turn it into a tag, but if you want a more polished finish, use a small tag die with a loop at the top, and layer it in your base design.

He’ll come a callin’ when the snow’s the most, when all you cats are sleepin’ warm as toast …

As a little “bonus” project, I created a small gift bag (using the chorus of today’s carol) by altering the size of the Letterboard Die Set to match the front of a bag die from My Favorite Things.

TIP: Use an adhesive like “Stick-It” on cardstock before cutting letterboard letters to make placement a breeze.
