Halloween Magic – Color a Barn Owl

It’s Sandy Allnock – have you missed me!? It feels like it’s been ever since I visited here….but let’s change that right now, with a peek at a new release!

The stamp set is called Halloween Magic – and it’s got a super cute owl and a bunch of other Halloween images and sentiments (and a coordinating die set!) While all the sneak peeks are going on, be sure to add this one to your list. I can even see using this owl and the eyeball stamp year round!

I got out my Polychromos pencils to use on both black and white paper – if you haven’t tried pencils on black cardstock, you’re missing out! The colors used are only these – super simple:

Here’s the video tutorial….it’ll be fun!

Watch on YouTube.

On white paper (I used Arches Hot Press), the image is stamped in black; I colored over the black lines around the face and belly of the owl with a white pencil to soften them. The sentiment inspired me to make a hanging fabric flag blowing in the wind as a “sign!”

When coloring on black cardstock, have a little test piece to use – see what the coloors look like on black! I even print out my charts on black. Why? Because some pigments are more transparent (see through) and won’t show up well (which you may sometimes want)….AND some colors are more opaque – so they show up more and cover colors under them. A really opaque color might not let those white highlights on the wing show up at all.

A few extra cards made with this stamp set – I had fun making spooky Copic airbrush backgrounds but you can also do these with ink blending if you’re a whiz at that! (I’m not, thus the airbrush!) I airbrushed entirely over the spiders, then colored their bodies in a medium gray copic, and added a simple white pen highlight. More on the eye below.

To make a realistic eye, I first made the green underneath shaded – dark on top, light at the bottom. Then added flick marks in a dark green (YG67), and went over that with flicks in a medium green (YG17) I expanded the black center a little bit, and added a white pen highlight. For the white of the eye, I put a C6 shadow right under the top lid, and blended it with C1—because the detail in the center of the eye made it look creepy without that shadow to soften it! I hope to post an IGTV of ways to color this eye in the next week or two.

That’s it from me today….hope you enjoyed this! Stick around for the new release coming up very soon!

Crafty hugs!
Sandy

I’m an equal opportunity pencil-lover! 🙂 And I haven’t been gone anywhere, just busy!
