Coloring A Scene With Essentials by Ellen Lil’ Squatch

Coloring a scene is a great way to create a card with adorable critters like the Essentials by Ellen Lil’ Squatch! Today Sandy is teaching us to use watercolor pencils to color an ice cave!

Hello coloristas! It’s Sandy Allnock here with another bit of coloring fun – this time with Lil Squatch! When I get my hands on a fun little stamp set like this, I just have to color it up with some scenes.

Last weekend for the release, I painted them outdoors in a fall scene – with the cute trees from the set. (You can see more of that over HERE.)

I had asked on social media for some ideas for scenes where the squatches (squatchii?) can be. I left the trees off the card for today – and someone suggested an ice cave, decking the halls. I had my doubts, but started looking up ice caves on google to get some ideas. The scenes I liked most had a strong light, which of course always makes me happy so I went with it!

Of course this card uses watercolor pencils, and the Albrecht Durer are my go-to brand of late. I have a bunch of brands but something about the colors in this collection make me happy. Mauve keeps jumping out of the box to make me smile!

For my little swatches, I’ve cut 1.5″ squares and drawn little boxes myself, so I’m not very fancy – the “AD” indicates the Albrecht Durer brand, and I do other abbreviations for other brands. (The little dot on the swatches tell me it’s also in the set of 60 so I’m trying to use colors from that so you don’t have to have the big set. Yes Mauve is in the smaller set, lol!)

After I had drawn my ornaments with watercolor pencil – and green bows – I remembered I have STICKLES! What abominable snowman wouldn’t love some SPARKLE!

Look at all the cute little sparkly ornaments! The finishing of this card, of course, was to add some red layers, pop the panels on dimensional adhesive, and stamp the sentiment and pop it as well. The adhesives that work great for bumpy watercolor paper are the Scotch roll of dimensional, or any size of the Be Creative tapes.
