Have you seen all the slimline card designs that have recently taken-off across social media? EH Design Ambassador Emily Mydlowski is here today to share her tips and tricks to create an interactive slimline slider card.
Recently, I discovered the new slimline card size and I’m having a blast using my existing stamps to create new looks with the new-to-me long and lean canvas size. Today, I’m using the Essentials by Ellen Space Out Stamps to create an out of this world Slimline Slider Card.
Creating the Slimline Panels
When I create slimline cards, my ultimate goal is that it fits in a #10 Envelope. The card size is usually:
- Card Base: 8-¾ x 7-½; scored in half at 3-¾
- Large Panel Layer: 8-½ x 3-¼
- Small Panel Layer: 8-¼ x 3-½
For my card I created a stitched layered design using the Trinity Stamps Stitched Frames and Squares Slimline Die Set but you can also get a similar stitched layered look using the Lawn Fawn Large Slimline with Sliders Die Set and the Heffy Doodle Stitched Slimline Trio Die Set. For best results, I like to use an extended platform and cutting plates with my die cutting machine when using slimline sized dies.
Decorating the Slimline Panel
- All of the images were stamped with VersaFine Nocturne Ink, heat embossed with clear embossing powder and colored with Zig Clean Color Real Brush Markers. After coloring, the images were die cut using the Spaced Out Coordinating Dies.
- The Rocket Ship: I created a clear window for the little alien using acetate and one of the small planet circle dies.
- The Moon Landing: I used the Trinity Stamps Crater Layers Stencil with Dusty Concord, Shaded Lilac and Wilted Violet Distress Oxide Inks. For extra sparkle, I added the amazing Moon Dust Ranger Stickles Glitter Gel. This glitter gel has the perfect smooth glide for stencil layering. A new Favorite in my craft room!
Creating the Slider
- Create a slide channel using a Slider Die. I used the Slide on Over Lawn Cut Dies and ran it through my die cutting machine twice. Once for the original size of the channel and then on the second cut, I moved the die slightly higher so I could cover more of the slimline panel.
- Die cut or punch out a small cardstock circle (I used a circle from the Essentials Circle Designer Die Set) and attach a My Favorite Things Replenishments Slider Element to the circle with strong adhesive tape to create your slider mechanism.
- Place the slider mechanism into the channel from the back of the card panel. Then attach the rocket ship die cut to the other side of the plastic slider element. (Photo below shows back of panel with rocket attached to the slider mechanism).
- Test your rocket ship to make sure it properly lifts off and lands without falling off the slide channel.
- Place a double-layer of foam tape around the channel (make sure the foam tape does not interfere with the slider mechanism). Then adhere your slider panel to the larger rectangle card panel.
Finishing the Card
- To make sure the rocket ship could fly over the planets, I adhered all the colored images using liquid adhesive to keep them as flat as possible.
- I added a few extra star embellishments for extra pop.
- As an extra fun surprise, I added an alien under the rocket ship so that it looked like he was dropped off when the spaceship launched. I also added the “look at you take off” sentiment under the ship for a little extra whimsy.
- To complete the card, I attached the layered slider card panel to an Ebony cardstock base.
