Hello hello and happy fall, y’all! (It was only 90 here in Texas today so that counts as fall around here lol!)
Anyhow, for today’s project I thought I’d share some tips and tricks for fall watercoloring! Cue the pumpkin spice and let’s get started!
First I stamped a bunch of trees from the Good Day set on watercolor paper and then colored them simply by splashing on color — the key here is not to overdo it! I stamped some pumpkins and leaves from Pumpkin Season while I was at it. For this card I used new gamboge and quinacridone rose.
Pro tip: I like to heat emboss my stamped images with clear embossing powder. That way when I’m working with opaque colors my images will stay nice and crisp.
Then I reached for the Abstract Mountain die and die cut it from watercolor paper and had a blast coloring it!
Here are the colors from the top:
- Cerulean blue mixed with just a touch of phthalo blue green shad for the sky! Don’t worry about making this perfect, any streaks will just look like clouds.
- The next two mountains are new gamboge. Tip: while the paint is still damp, charge in a little clean water for cool effects!
- The next mountain was painted in quinacridone rose first and then I dotted in new gamboge and cadmium red scarlet while it was still wet.
- Next up we have quinacridone rose with a little cadmium red dotted in on the right side.
- Last but not least, the final mountain is all cadmium red scarlet.
More tips: When watercoloring die cuts, I like to work on an old rag or paper towel — this will help keep your desk clean as well as prevent backruns. Don’t worry if your paper warps while you’re painting — it will usually flatten out as it dries. If it doesn’t, you can wet the back with clean water and then put one of the plates from your die cutting machine over the piece and then pile books on top — works every time!
Then it was just a matter of assembling the pieces! I can almost feel the crisp fall air and hear the leaves crunch, how about you?
