Hello friends! It’s Sandy Allnock and I’m so excited to celebrate my friend Ellen’s business birthday! I’ve made her a card using the stamp set that you can get free with purchase – and an old favorite stamp set, Lil Squatch! Here’s a little step by step to create your own birthday cake with him – or any other stamped critter!
Supplies needed are pretty simple for this. I chose to watercolor so used Arches cold press; and that means I also needed a waterproof black ink and chose Versafine Onyx Black. Have some sticky notes handy, and a pen that’ll work with your selected medium.
I cut my paper to slimline size (3.75″ x 9″ or whatever fits in your business-sized envelope). I stamped the “Hip Hip Hooray” at the top, with lil squatch below. This idea works especially well with any stamp that’s raising arms to the sky!
Next – an easy way to “build” a cake! Cut sticky notes into whatever sizes and shapes you want! Big tall sections, lots of little ones. Set them up straight by using a ruler, or kittywompus – whatever you’d like.
Remove them one by one as you trace around them. I made mine a little rounded, and deliberately didn’t use a ruler so it didn’t look “too” straight. Once you start down that road, everything needs to be straight, so letting it go a little looser is helpful. Add any decorations, frosting, etc that you’d like.
Time to color! I chose a dark pink (Quinacridone Rose with more pigment than water) and a light pink (lots more water to lighten it) and made an orange (Aussie Red Gold + a tiny bit of Pyrrol Scarlet)….these are Ellen’s colors of her logo so I thought it would be perfect!
As I was finishing up, I realized I could add just a few candles on the edges of the cake – draw a box, then a flick of New Gamboge for a flame.
Finally, let the PARTY begin – with confetti! I kept it to the center, and a little more dense at the top than the bottom. Oh and did you notice lil squatch is PINK?!!?
Some alternatives to this would be to turn the cake into a stack of gift boxes. If you don’t like to color, try stacking up patterned paper shapes to create your birthday stack!
Such a fun card to celebrate my friend’s achievement….it’s not easy keeping a business going, and surviving through a pandemic, but Ellen and her team are awesome. Hip hip hooray!
