Julie’s spillin’ the tea for successful card layouts and composition on today’s post!
Hello, it’s me, Julie! The majority of my cards are clean and simple, but pulling off that look can be tricky; some pre-planning and sketching is always helpful, including some guidelines, a number of which I’ve gleaned from graphic design resources over the years. I’m highlighting many of those guidelines in today’s video, walking you through some previous card designs and how I applied these tips. I’ve also included a little “cheat sheet” for you to download (below the video), in case it helps!
TIPS:
- Download the cheat sheet Julie has provided as a handy reference; it also includes 3 of her favorite go-to layouts.
- Consider the rules as guidelines; they’re not carved in stone and sometimes, you have to break them to develop a layout that works for a particular design.
- It helps when sketching your ideas to apply the Rule of Thirds to your project(s); if you have trouble visualizing the space, make a template from vellum or other translucent/transparent material that you can overlay on your designs to help guide you.
- When things don’t go according to plan, it’s OK! But, having the plan in the first place can alleviate a lot of issues before starting on the actual project. Scratch paper is fantastic for testing before committing. Just sayin’ . . . (wink)
