The holidays are coming up, and that means it’s time to get cracking on those handmade gift projects – one of my favorite things about the season! While I’m not typically on top of my game enough throughout the year to create a matching tag for each one of my cards, I’ve been head over heels in love with the new Modern Tags die set from the Fall Essentials by Ellen release, and jumped at the chance to create a bunch of layered tags.
You may already have other Essentials by Ellen tag dies in your stash, and if so, I’ll show you a few examples of how to mix and match with the Modern Tags. I’ll also show you how to make an edge-to-edge shaker tag, and share some tips for ensuring your tags look like a cohesive set (if that’s the look you’re going for!) Let’s get to it, shall we?
Tips
- Since tags are smaller than cards, they’re a fabulous way to use up those leftover little bits of cardstock and vellum. Have a look through your stash before getting started and collect pieces that fall into your chosen color palette. It’s a GREAT feeling when you can put scraps to good use!
- To make the tags look like a coordinated set, pick a few elements to feature consistently throughout. I’ve done this in several ways – a color palette, a hot foil print featured throughout all the tags, stamped images from the same stamp set, and the same large tag from the Modern Tags die set as the foundation for all.
- Vellum is a beautiful way to add layers to your tags, and since it’s partially transparent, it won’t obscure the design elements you’ve placed behind.
- Shaker filling isn’t just for cards – you can use it on tags too! I’ve created an edge-to-edge shaker tag by folding vellum around the edges of the largest tag in the Modern Tags die set. To make sure the little bits never escape and to cover the adhesive on the back side of the shaker pouch, I adhered another die cut tag on the back side with strong double-sided tape.
- When tying all of your tag layers together with the twine or ribbon of your choice, spare yourself the trouble of dealing with frayed ends and use a large-eyed needle instead. Yes, it may take a few minutes to find one, but you’ll thank me later!
