About this time last year I was on a hunt for unique holiday songs to add to my playlist and went down an internet rabbit hole (I’m sure you know how that goes). *laugh* After finding some gems by Leslie Odom Jr, I was led to another Hamilton actor – Daveed Diggs – and Puppy for Hanukkah. If you haven’t heard it, give it a listen here! It’s a fun one – and was the first song to pop to mind for 12 Tags this year.

My approach to creating scenes is to pick images I like and stamp a bunch. This lets me play with different image combinations and create a number of tags that are all a little different (it’s also a lot faster than if I was designing one at a time – perfect for the festive season when I need a lot of tags). For these I picked a number of cute boxes I could color and stack, in addition to the puppy and Bear.
TIP: Choose a color scheme you love and use it for all your designs! For my Hanukkah theme, I stuck to blue, teal, gold, and added the slightest hint of blush pink for a small twist on a traditional palette.

TIP: If puppies aren’t your thing, you can swap out the puppy for anything that suits you: other animals, other holiday icons, etc. Sky’s the limit for these versatile designs! (Plus, Bear can hold just about anything you’d like – love that!)

TIP: Paper from the Modern Graphics 2 paper pack can be foiled! It’s a great way to add some sparkle to your design, that’s also a fab choice for designs you’re mass producing because you can foil an entire sheet, then cut a number of tags from it.

As a little bonus tag, I added a personalized touch to each base tag by die-cutting an initial from a shape that resembles a dreidel. (For letters – like the D – that have an extra bit, I added a bit of acetate to the white layer so I could adhere the extra cut bits to it.)
TIP: Want to make your own dreidel tags? Click the image below to download a handy PDF, print it on cardstock of your choice, and cut! I like to use the Classic Block Alphabet Die Set to personalize them. (My go-to cardstock for tags is 110lb Neenah Solar White because it’s nice and sturdy, especially if you’re shipping gifts.)
We have our friend Suzanna Hansen teamed up with Heather! Here’s how she was inspired by the song, Puppy for Hanukkah:

Oh my gawsh, Bear holding the doggy–I’m dead, Lol! I absolutely love this tag! (And to think that I had exhausted all the things that Bear could hold, lol!) You are a clever genius, Heather! I don’t celebrate Hanukkah, so no surprise I’ve never heard this song before, but I had a listen & it’s great! Really cracked me up…”oh, yep, that’s just socks”. 😂 Heather, there’s a beautiful elegance inherent in your minimal coloring, & combined with that foiled patterned paper: wow!! I’m going to have to try your design approach, because it really paid off! & Suzanna, I love the crisp white against the solid color tag! Very striking!
