How to Get More from your Dies

Do you love finding ways to stretch your crafty supplies? We certainly do and clever DT Member Ardyth had some fun with the spaceship die from Space Out to make a couple of cards that might surprise you!

It started with an inspiration – I wanted to make a card with a bee on it. I had seen an image on pinterest that made me think that the Folk Heart dies would work really well as bee-wings. But I had to search for something to use for the body! I started looking through my standalone dies, and thought that the Essential Ovals would work. But something pushed me to keep looking and that’s where Space Out came in! That pointy spaceship ‘nose’ was the perfect stinger. All I had to do was trim off the fins and add some colour! One of the planet dies works perfectly as his head!

I created the background with some honey-coloured Catherine Pooler inks and one of the Hex Fames used as a stencil. The card is finished with a punny sentiment created with the Classic Block Alphabet dies.

And once I got going, I wondered if this die could be transformed into other shapes! The ‘fins’ gave it away – this is a perfect shark!

I created two layers of ocean with more Catherine Pooler inks and the Waves dies. This was to hide the other fin and the fact that this poor shark doesn’t really have a tail!

I cut out a mouth and created some fearsome teeth with one of the grass edges from Landscapes, and layered up a white and a black dot for his eye. A sentiment from Inner Mermaid is the perfect finishing touch!

Here’s a video to show how I transformed a rocket die cut into a bee and a shark! I hope you’ll be inspired to take a look at your die collection with a fresh perspective!
